The Realschule an der Salzstraße (also Staatliche Realschule Kempten , or outdated Knabenrealschule ) is a middle school in Kempten . The secondary school is housed in a listed building . The house number is 17 .
history
On September 4, 1956, classes began for 71 pupils at the newly founded "Staatliche Mittelschule für Knaben", who were taught in two classes by five teachers. The founding rector was Dr. Hellmuth Carl. Teaching took place in the former building of the humanistic grammar school on Fürstenstrasse, which was built in 1863. Around 1964 the official name of the school was "Staatliche Realschule für Knaben Kempten". In 1969 the company moved to the school building at "Salzstrasse 17", from which the Allgäu grammar school had moved. As of the 2002/2003 school year, the school will be co-educational and may use the name "Realschule an der Salzstraße".
building
The listed building was built based on the model of the Wittelsbach school directly next to it by Leonhard Heydecker with a roof turret in the years 1914/15 for the “Royal Realschule with Commercial Department”, a predecessor of the Allgäu-Gymnasium. The school has an angular floor plan and three-story wings. It is built in the New Baroque style with Art Nouveau elements.
In an architects' magazine published in 1920, the building is described as follows: “The homely and cozy architecture that is already expressed on the front side is enhanced inside the building. The spacious hall, which we enter from the vestibule, has a very atmospheric effect thanks to the artificial glazing of the windows, a small ornamental fountain, and the colored treatment of the pillars that support the wide vaults. It opens up after a staircase leading in three runs to the upper floor, the dark oak railing of which stands out sharply against the white of the ceilings and walls. The mentioned rooms as well as the individual classrooms, even the corridors, have been designed so lovingly by the architects down to the last detail that we actually don't have the impression of being in a school. "
In the decades 1970/80 renovations and conversions were carried out, specialist rooms were created and the gymnasium was converted into an auditorium. In 2010 the caretaker's apartment was closed and converted into classrooms.
An extension has been worked on since 2011. This building will contain a cafeteria with a break hall and several classrooms.
A plaque embedded in the facade of the Heimatverein Kempten reminds of Otto Merkt's parents' house there . It was demolished so that the school building could be rebuilt there.
