Today's Allgäu-Gymnasium, founded in 1965, is the descendant of several higher-ranking schools located elsewhere.

Provisional school building

The grammar school is based on the establishment of an agricultural and trade school in parts of the former blacksmith's house in Kempten in 1833. From March 1834, the school was housed in the south-western wing of the former prince abbot's residence . Two school levels were taught here. In 1851, with the third grade, the institution was promoted to a “complete first-class school”.

Lyceum at the city park

Lyceum am Stadtpark, today the seat of medical practices, shops and offices

In 1857 they moved into the Lyceum on Schwaigwiese (today Albert-Wehr-Platz ). A commercial specialty was established here. In 1864 the school was renamed the Royal Industrial and Commercial School. Agriculture lessons were given up accordingly. A major renovation was carried out on the schoolhouse in 1874 with the expansion of the third floor.

With the extension of school attendance from three to six years, the pupils were able to take a written exam, the "Absolutorial Examination". With this change, the school was renamed the Royal Bavarian School in 1877 . The business school was given up.

In 1903 the commercial department was reintroduced, as a result of which the school was renamed the Royal Realschule with commercial department .

In 1910 the decision was made to build a new school building. It was decided to build the new school building just a few hundred meters from the previous one. The new angular building designed by the architects Heydecker was built in 1914/15. A year later, the school was renamed the Königliche Ludwigs-Realschule with a commercial department . In 1922, female pupils could be taught for the first time. In 1923 the Realschule was elevated to a 9-stage Oberrealschule . Here were English and French arranged as subjects.

In 1938, the upper secondary school was dubbed a secondary school in its basic form . Latin was used as a second foreign language. Since girls were able to acquire the Abitur at the girls' school, since the summer of 1939 only boys have been taught at the secondary school. Because of this, the school was renamed Oberrealschule for boys in 1940 . In 1944 there was no more school-leaving examination for the Abitur, as many students and teachers were called up for military service.

Because of constant low-flying attacks, all schools in Kempten were closed from April 13, 1945. From September 1941 to 1945, at least 124 students were killed in combat during World War II . On April 28, 1945, the school building on Salzstrasse was confiscated by the American occupation . From then on, the school building served as accommodation for refugees and displaced persons from Central and Eastern Europe .

On October 29, 1945, lessons for the first four classes with 424 students in the Illerschule on Illerstrasse were continued. Due to a lack of coal for heating, the school had to be closed from Christmas until mid-February. From October 1, 1946, classes were held again in the school building on Salzstrasse with over 690 students. Since 1943, the matriculation examination takes place for the first time in 1947. In the same year, two branches of the school were set up:

  • Linguistic branch (with Latin as a second foreign language)
  • Mathematical and scientific branch (with French as a second foreign language)

On July 8, 1947, the first school newspaper “The Squid” appeared. In 1951 the 9th grade was re-established and two years later girls were admitted to school again, but initially only for the upper grades. A third branch was introduced in 1962 with the real-gymnasiale branch with the foreign languages English, Latin and French. Two years later, girls were allowed to attend secondary school without restrictions. On October 23, 1965, the upper secondary school was renamed Allgäu-Gymnasium .

On October 3, 1969, the new school building at the Haubenschloß was inaugurated. With the construction of today's schoolhouse, a large part of the Hoefelmayrpark disappeared from the map. About 1000 students were initially taught here. In 1974 an extension was built and the study seminar with the subjects of sport, biology and art education was introduced. In the 1977/78 school year the proportion of girls rose to over 30 percent for the first time. The school kitchen has been organized by parents and teachers on a voluntary basis since 1978. In 1980 the pavilion was set up with four classrooms. In the 1981/82 school year, the Allgäu-Gymnasium had the largest number of pupils in its history, at 1655. In 1987, Spanish was introduced as an elective .
