The Rec Comtal (also Sèquia Comtal or Acequia Condal in Spanish ) is a former irrigation canal in Catalonia .

history

Probably in the middle of the 10th century, Count Miró I of Barcelona reconstructed an old Roman aqueduct , which took water from the Besòs river near the town of Montcada i Reixac and directed it towards Barcelona. Outside the city, the canal was used for irrigation and to drive mills, inside the city - where it ran along Carrer de Regomir - to supply the Sant Pere district .

In order to meet the city's growing demand, the amount of water pumped was initially increased considerably in the 19th century, before the canal lost its importance for supplying Barcelona at the end of the 19th century and subsequently only for irrigating the gardens of the Sant Andreu district de Palomar was used.

Part of the Rec Comtal has been preserved in Vallbona in the Nou Barris district . In addition, there are uncovered remains of the canal in the former market hall of the Mercat del Born , today's Center de Cultura i Memòria (Culture and Remembrance Center).
