Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem (* 1847 , † 1914 ) was a Turkish writer and literary critic. He wrote poems, dramas and novels, dealt intensively with European literary theories and was an influential, decisive writer of his time.

Life

His father worked at the Academy of Sciences and at the age of 15 he became a civil servant in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later in various other fields. As a teacher, he wrote his own teaching material and performed systematic literary work that would benefit future generations.

The following description comes from the pen of the famous German orientalist Otto Spies : “These literary theories, through which the new art forms created by Sinasi and Kemal became understandable, remained fundamental for a long time; they are recorded in Ta'lim-i edebiyat 'Literature Lessons' and Taqdir-i elhan 'Determination of Melodies'. The first work that arose from the lectures at the Mülkiye is actually the first work of Turkish poetics. Through these works and his work as a teacher of literature at the Mülkiye, he had a lasting influence on the youth and the development of literature. That is why he was given the nickname Üstad 'master, teacher'. "

Like most writers of the time, Ekrem belonged to the circle of the Sultan's court. In the office he met Namik Kemal and other famous personalities of the time and was close friends with most of them. It was he who, after Sinasi and Namik Kemal, took over the "Young Turks" newspaper Tasvir-i Efkar (porter of ideas) and thus operated literature and politics at the same time for years.

Ekrem founded the famous magazine Servet-i Fünûn ( German  wealth of science ) and always brought together young and established writers in the editorial office. It is known that he set quality as the highest standard and even dismissed his son from management. The famous poet Tevfik Fikret , who was the literary director for a while, was a student of Ekrem at Galatasaray High School. Intensive promotion of Turkish literature and entire generations of writers was achieved through the magazine Servet-i Fünun (Wealth of Science), which Ekrem brought to life.
