Recipe Unlimited Corporation is a Canadian company that operates multiple chain restaurants as well as large food distributors for correctional facilities, educational institutions, and other large operations.

history

The company was originally founded in 1883 as the Canada Railway News Company , selling newspapers, magazines and confectionery at train stations. The company's roots go back to the mid-1850s when Thomas Patrick Phelan sold fruit and newspapers to cater to passengers between Hamilton and Buffalo . Canada Railway News soon got into the grocery business and sparked a boom in rail passenger transport in Canada.

In the 1930s, the company began providing catering services to airlines . By 1951 there were about 1,500 meals a day. In 1961 the company changed its name to Cara Operations Limited . The name Cara was derived from the first two letters of the words "Canada Railway".

Cara was solely owned by the Phelan family from its inception in 1883 until it went public in 1968. At that time his main business was the supply of the transport sector (flight and train catering); however, there were a few unnamed restaurants and cafes in various office towers and airport terminals in Canada. The total turnover of all divisions in 1968 was 30 million CAD .

In 2002, total company sales were $ 1.9 billion. 88% of the business is accounted for by catering for guests, the remaining 12% for catering for passengers.

In May 2018, CEO Bill Gregson announced that Cara Operations Limited would change its name to Recipe Unlimited Corporation .
