action

New York: As a twelve-year-old boy, Jacob went to his room out of longing for his missing father, John Reckless. There he finds a message with the help of which he enters a mirror world through a mirror. There the characters from Grimm's fairy tales actually exist , but the world has evolved and modernized and is now in a state of decay.

From now on he often secretly visits the mirror world, at fifteen he stole away for weeks for the first time. In the longer and longer periods of time in which he is absent from his world, he becomes an apprentice to the treasure hunter Chanute. Jacob later became a treasure hunter for the Empress of Australia.

Twelve years after Jacob Reckless first came into the world behind the mirror, his brother Will sees him disappear into the magic mirror and follows him. There Will is attacked by a goyl, whereupon a jade skin slowly grows on him, which turns him into a goyl. Will's girlfriend Clara follows him through the mirror and sets off with him and Jacob and his companion Fuchs, who are trying to find an antidote to the curse. The first attempt to heal Will Reckless with berries from the bush of a child-eating witch from the Black Forest fails, Jacob and Fuchs escape the so-called "tailor" with difficulty. The tailor makes clothes from human skin.

At the same time, the Goyl under King Kami'en and with the help of the Dark Fairy are waging war against the imperial armies, many people have already fallen victim to the war. The Dark Fairy has a dream of a Jade-Goyl, in the fairy tales a legendary guardian who is supposed to save the Goyl in her darkest hour. And so Goyl Hentzau goes with an armed troop in search of Will Reckless, who is the only one to grow the jade skin.

Meanwhile, Jacob and the others make their way to the red fairy Miranda, from whom he hopes for help. But only the dwarf Evenaugh Valiant knows the way there, and so he has to trust him for better or worse, even though the dwarf has cheated on him before. The red fairy promises to help Jacob, but only on condition that she destroy her sister, the dark fairy. When he returns from the fairy, his brother is kidnapped by Hentzau and so he and Valiant have to follow him underground to free Will. But the attempt fails and they have to flee.

In order to make peace again, Empress Therese of Australia and King Kami'en decide that he will soon be married to Therese's daughter. Will, who has since turned completely into a Goyl and has forgotten his former life, is the king's bodyguard. Shortly before the wedding, Jacob succeeds in capturing the dark fairy by pronouncing her name, which he learned from Miranda. He is now trying to find Will and bring him to the Dark Fairy so that she can transform him back.

The Empress learns that the Dark Fairy is no longer protecting Kami'en and tries to have him and the Goyl present at the wedding, including Will, killed. To save his brother, Jacob is forced to free the dark fairy again, who then appears and kills most of the people present. The Goyl take the rest of them hostage. Amazingly, the Dark Fairy transforms Will back into a human, but threatens to kill him if Jacob doesn't take him far. So Will and Clara go back to the other world, Jacob Reckless, however, has drawn a curse from the Dark Fairy when he pronounced her name and is looking for an antidote, otherwise he will die in a year.

reception

Steinernes Fleisch was delivered with a worldwide first edition of over a million copies and immediately reached first place on the fiction bestseller list in Germany. It was then in one of the top eight spots for 15 weeks. The reviews, however, are mixed: In the FAZ, Tilman Spreckelsen emphasizes the parallels to Funke's Ink World Trilogy , but is enthusiastic about Funke's language and the “dark dimension of the fairy tale” it presents. Burkhard Müller writes in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that the plot is not "particularly original" and that everything has "been there many times". He suspects that Cornelia Funke wrote the book with a view to filming it. Thomas Binotto from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung finds the plot exciting, but says that Funke's plan to write a book that all age groups would like has failed: "A lot is too brutal for children, but too harmless for adults." Grete Götze writes in the Frankfurter Rundschau that the book is exciting, but follows a very simple scheme of good and bad and reads "like a picture puzzle with the quiz question on which pages the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm are hidden". It leaves the impression "that someone knows exactly what ingredients are needed for a mass-compatible book: short sentences, adventures, enemies, dwarves, fairies and a hero".
