Live and act

Lorenz Johann Daniel Suckow was the son of the Schwerin cathedral preacher (Johann) Daniel Suckow (? –1726), his brother was the natural scientist and Erlangen university professor Simon Gabriel Suckow (1721–1786).

Suckow studied law at the University of Rostock from 1738 , but also dealt with mathematics, music and painting. In 1741 Suckow moved to the University of Jena , where he received his doctorate in January 1746 with the writing De acquisitione haereditatis ejusque effectibus secundum jus naturae . In April, he completed his habilitation with the Disputatio de expansione aeris per ignem for mathematics and physics (including architecture). From his lectures as a private lecturer, his first text, First Reasons of Civil Architecture, emerged in 1751 .

Suckow rejected an appointment at the University of Erlangen in 1754, but in the same year accepted a position at the Hamburg grammar school, which he took up in 1755. Just one year later he returned to Jena as a full professor of physics and mathematics. In the summer semester of 1762 he was rector of the university.

Suckow had been a Freemason since 1745. He took part early in high-grade masonry ( strict observance ) and was one of the first supporters of the con man Johnson.

His sons are the naturalists Georg Adolf Suckow and Wilhelm Karl Friedrich Suckow (1770–1848).
