The Red Canyon is located in Garfield County in the south of the US state Utah within the 7,645 km² Dixie National Forest . It has similar rock formations as the nearby Bryce Canyon , whose red-brown color gave the area its name.

Geography and geology

The Red Canyon is located about 15 km northwest of Bryce Canyon National Park and is located on the Colorado Plateau on the southeast edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau . In contrast to the national park, you enter the Red Canyon from the valley floor, while the Bryce Canyon is reached from the high plateau. In the valley runs the mostly dry river bed of the Paria River , a 121 km long right tributary of the Colorado River . Water, wind and ice eroded the rock of the plateau into bizarre red pinnacles, the so-called hoodoos , which can reach heights of up to 60 meters. The rock layer from the Claron Formation got its intense red color from the iron oxide it contained.

Tourism

The Red Canyon is located on Utah Highway 12 , which carries the suffix Scenic Byway ; a busy route to Bryce Canyon. Most visitors coming from the west continue without stopping in order to hurry to the much more famous Bryce Canyon, because the Red Canyon is mentioned in very few travel guides. The Red Canyon is smaller than the Bryce Canyon, but can certainly compete with its big brother in terms of scenic beauty. Around a dozen hiking trails open up the park. The most famous of these are the 1.3 km long Birds Eye Trail and the 4.8 km long Losee Trail. At the park entrance near Highway 12 is the Red Canyon Visitor Center and a little east of it is the Trailhead Kiosk. Here the visitor gets the information they want. The Red Canyon is popular with mountain bikers, because there are around 55 km of designated bicycle routes, so-called single tracks , that can be used all year round. Admission to Red Canyon is free and accommodations are available at Ruby's Inn at Bryce Canyon and in the town of Panguitch, among others .
