Red Wing Shoes is an American shoe manufacturer based in Red Wing , Minnesota . Red Wing sells its products in North and South America, Canada, Europe and Japan. The company reported 1997 revenues of $ 293.1 million.
Company history
The Red Wing Shoe Company was founded in 1905 by Charles H. Beckman (* 1856 in Elm, today Bremervörde), a shoemaker who immigrated to the USA in 1873. He sold his first pair of shoes for $ 1.75.
In 1915 the company produced 200,000 pairs of shoes a year. It became an important supplier of shoes for American soldiers during World War I. JR Sweasy headed the company from 1921. He led it successfully through the difficult economic times of the 1920s and 1930s. During this time the "Oil King Boot" was developed for the workers in the oil fields and a "Brown Chief" as a boot for farmers. The company thus laid the foundation for the development of work shoes for specific professions.
The brand's logo was designed in 1925. In 1934, shoes with steel toecaps went into production. Red Wing also supplied the American military during World War II. 239 different sizes and widths were produced for the soldiers alone .
In 1960, a second production facility was opened three kilometers from the first factory. The company now also has its own dye works and tannery. In the following years the company developed new soling techniques. The crepe sole and the cork insole remain a trademark of the label to this day.
Products
Red Wing mainly produces "heavy" shoes, i.e. leather boots with different heights, mountain and work shoes. The latter are also offered with steel caps or a particularly resistant surface. The upper material is brown or black leather . Closed loafers complete the offer.
