Redlove is a new apple variety (launched in 2010) and a globally protected brand name . Redloves are red-fleshed apples that are characterized by a special taste, dark-red flesh color, pink / dark-red apple blossoms and cut open by a heart / star-shaped pattern in the flesh. The English name is composed of Red and Love. Red due to the red flesh and Love due to the heart-shaped pattern that the apples show when cut lengthways.

Origin and Distribution

Redloves were bred by Markus Kobelt in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland . Markus Kobelt is the owner of a tree nursery and plant breeder specializing in soft fruit and fruit trees . According to his information, the breeding of the Redloves took about 20 years, since the variety was produced using classic breeding methods by crossing and selecting.

Cultivation licenses for commercial cultivation are sold internationally (England, China, South Korea, Africa, USA).

As of January 2017, seven different varieties are known:

“Redlove Era”, “Redlove Circe”, “Redlove Sirena”, “Redlove Odysso”, “Redlove Lollipop”, “Redlove Kohlhaas”, and “Redlove Calypso”.

Due to the red pulp, Redloves have a 30 to 40 times higher anthocyanin content than conventional apple varieties. The latest Redlove variety Kohlhaas has been available since January 2017. Redlove Kohlhaas is the mildest redlove. The Sirena variety is no longer available in stores. All Redlove varieties are scab resistant , fire blight resistant varieties are currently being bred.
