Redneck Rampage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Redneck Rampage is a comic- style first person shooter released in 1997 .

Action and gameplay

Two farmers live in imaginary Hickston, Arkansas , USA, one of whom ( Leonard ) is controlled by the player. A sudden alien invasion begins: the aliens kidnap Leonard's favorite pig and clone his immediate neighbors (including Coot and Billy ) a thousand times over. With shotgun and revolver, they stand in the way of the player who takes an action to save his favorite pig through many levels . The game makes fun of the rednecks , that is, members of the rural lower class (especially in the southern states ). In addition, the play elements are comparatively “wacky”: For example, dominatrix Aliens in latex dress attack you who are firing from their breasts. The player can later pick up a BH rapid fire rifle and use it himself. There's also a circular saw blade launcher, a chopped off alien arm that doubles as a plasma weapon, and dynamite sticks in a crossbow that serve as a missile launcher replacement. As health fresheners, there is alcohol (whiskey, beer) and bacon rinds, as well as homemade schnapps (so-called moonshine ) as an adrenaline booster . Unlike in other games with the build engine , you don't end the levels here by pressing a switch at the end, but by hitting your friend Bubba on the head with the crowbar .

technology

Redneck Rampage is based on the Build Engine , a graphics engine from 3D Realms that they had already used for Duke Nukem 3D . As a pure DOS game, the game supported very high resolutions via VESA and the levels were comparatively large.

Versions

In addition to the regular full version Redneck Rampage , for whose German localization only the manual and the packaging were translated (the text in the game and the voice output remained in English), two smaller versions came onto the market in the USA: The Early Years only played the first 5 levels plus 8 multiplayer levels. On the other hand, the entire scope was on the CD, which could be activated online. Possum Bayou contained the first 7 levels and thus the complete first episode. Redneck Rampage was added to the index on September 30, 1997 .

Extensions, successors and spin-offs

For Redneck Rampage there was an additional language package called Cuss-Pack (English "swear word package"), which added swear words to the already vulgar language of the game. It could be downloaded from Interplay's website for the symbolic price of $ 1. This dollar had to be paid by credit card, the payment served as proof of age.

For Redneck Rampage one was an add-on called Suckin 'Grits On Route 66 published. Like many add-ons for Duke Nukem 3D, this came from Sunstorm Interactive .

The game got a regular successor with Redneck Rampage Rides Again! . In this one could u. a. steering an airboat and a Harley .

Two spin-offs came out: In Redneck Deer Huntin ' you had to hunt game . It was also based on the BUILD engine and was a hunting simulation that is mainly popular in the USA. In Germany the game was released as Deer Stalker . There is also Off-Road Redneck Racing , a racing game with pick-ups and buggies .

The licensing rights for the Redneck Rampage series were acquired by Vivendi Universal in July 2004 for about 300,000 US dollars. In April 2009 it was announced that the trademark rights to Redneck Rampage now belong to the American developer Blizzard Entertainment . Several former developers of the game series are also currently employed at Blizzard.

development

The game was developed by Xatrix Entertainment - who were later also responsible for Kingpin - under the direction of Drew Markham. Xatrix later renamed itself Gray Matter Interactive and was then responsible for Return to Castle Wolfenstein , among other things . Gray Matter was bought by Activision in 2002 and added to the Treyarch development studio in 2005 . Redneck Rampage was released by Interplay Productions .
