Redshift is free software that changes the color temperature of displays based on the time. The purpose of the program is to prevent eye pain and sleep disturbances from working at the screen during the night. The proprietary tool f.lux served as inspiration . Redshift itself is designed for the command line , but graphical applications also exist. The program is installed by default on Ubuntu MATE .
background
The proportion of the color blue in sunlight decreases in the course of the day towards the evening, while the red proportion increases. The color temperature falls from almost 6000 K during the day to values below 2500 K. Monitors of all types, on the other hand, have a constant color temperature, depending on the setting between 5000 K and 6500 K.
The production of the hormone melatonin is light-dependent and blue light in particular influences it. Since the hormone regulates the sleep rhythm, it could be negatively affected by the blue light emitted by LCD screens. A study carried out on 13 subjects from 2011 supports this thesis, but there is still a need for further research to clarify the topic more precisely.
Functions
In order to reduce the proportion of blue light, the color temperature is lowered. While it is still 5500 to 6500 Kelvin during the day, the value at night is only around 3000 to 4000 K. In addition, a gamma correction can be made for the values during the day and at night.
Redshift offers the option of setting a gradual transition of the color temperature instead of a constant value. For this, the respective height of the sun at the user's location is determined, which is determined by manual inputs, the clock of the desktop environment GNOME or the Geoclue framework .
disadvantage
If the color temperature of the monitor is lowered by the software, no work should be carried out on the computer that requires precise color representation ( e.g. image and video editing ).
