Reem Sahwil (* 2000 in Baalbek , Lebanon ) is a stateless student who lives with her family in Germany . After it was tolerated for a limited period , a settlement permit is now available. In 2015 she became known as the “crying refugee girl” during a citizens' dialogue with Chancellor Angela Merkel .

Life

Reem Sahwil was in Palestinian refugee quarter Wavel the Lebanese city of Baalbek as preterm birth. She had a walking problem from birth and was in a wheelchair for a long time. In 2006 she also suffered a traffic accident. In 2010 the family came to Germany for medical treatment for the paralysis. The money for this was raised in the immediate vicinity of the family. Reem Sahwil went to the school center Paul Friedrich Scheel in Rostock , a support center for the disabled, and was in her class class president . She was in a wheelchair because of her physical disability and has only been able to walk again since 2016. In July 2016, she stated that her health was “getting better and better”.

On July 15, 2015, the Citizens' Dialogue Good Living in Germany with Angela Merkel took place at school. 29 students took part. Reem Sahwil spontaneously asked the Chancellor whether the insecure residence status of her family as temporarily tolerated could be improved, otherwise she would see no future for herself. The Chancellor replied that a large number of people apply for asylum, that there are delays in processing and that some asylum seekers also have to go back. Sahwil began to cry and was then comforted by the Chancellor. She also praised her for her courage to present her problem.

A video excerpt from this conversation sparked controversial reactions. The Chancellor was described as "cold-hearted". Reem Sahwil himself found words of praise for her.

In December 2015, Sahwil appeared on TV in the RTL program “2015! People, Images, Emotions ”, the annual review moderated by Günther Jauch . In April 2016 she was invited to a private interview with Angela Merkel at the Federal Chancellery .

The toleration of the family, which consists of her parents, her younger brother, her younger sister and Reem, was valid until October 2017. The work of the father in refugee aid and the mother in a further education institution as well as the successful integration of the girl Reem were seen as positive . She lives with her parents and two siblings in a prefabricated building in Rostock- Evershagen .

In July 2016 she was questioned by the ARD magazine Brisant and replied that the media hype had made her "much braver ..., much more self-confident and also a little more independent". She initially received a residence permit until October 2017. At the end of September 2017, it became known that she had received a settlement permit so that she and her parents can stay in Germany permanently and are protected from deportation .

In February 2019, her family only had a residence permit in Germany until May 2019 and she was preparing for her secondary school leaving certificate .
