The Government Information Office ( Chinese  行政院新聞局 , Pinyin Xingzheng Yuan Xinwen Jú , English Government Information Office, abbr GIO. ) Was an authority at ministerial level that the Executive Yuan of the Republic of China (Taiwan) was one; the executive yuan is the government cabinet / council of ministers of the state. The GIO had the task of disseminating government policy and adapting media policy to the needs of the time.

tasks

The work of the GIO was primarily to explain state policy; the GIO minister also acted as government spokesman for the Republic of China. In addition, the GIO was commissioned to publish important information at home and abroad and to look after foreign journalists in Taiwan. In addition, the GIO dealt intensively with the production and processing of publications. These included foreign-language periodicals such as the monthly Taiwan Review (English, 65 pages), the bimonthly magazine Taiwan heute (German, 65 pages), the bimonthly magazine Taiwan Hoy (Spanish, 49 pages), the monthly magazine Taiwan aujourd'hui (French, 49 pages) , the bimonthly magazine Taiwanskaja Panorama ( Russian Тайваньская панорама ; Russian, 65 pages), news websites in English (Taiwan Today) and French (Taiwan Info). In addition, the GIO published the Yearbook of the Republic of China (English), the brochure “Taiwan at a Glance” (in numerous languages), and other information materials and promotional films were produced as required. The foreign branches of the GIO played an important role in the development of information and cultural projects abroad.

history

The GIO was officially established on May 2, 1947 by the government of the Republic of China in what was then the capital, Nanjing, on mainland China. In the turmoil of the civil war between the government led by the National People's Party ( Kuomintang , KMT) and the Chinese Communists, the administrative status of the GIO was changed several times before it was reactivated in Taiwan on January 1, 1954 . On March 1, 2006, the National Communications Commission ( 國家 englisch 傳播 委員會 , English National Communications Commission , abbreviation NCC) was founded, to which part of the responsibilities of the GIO, such as the regulation of the development of communications and information technology, the granting of broadcasting licenses and others. As part of the restructuring of the central government of the Republic of China, the GIO was dissolved on May 20, 2012, and its departments were divided between the Executive Yuan, the Foreign Ministry and the newly established Ministry of Culture.
