Government palace in Taranto (around 2013)

The government palace of Taranto is the seat of the prefecture , the administration of the province of Taranto and the police headquarters. It was built on the ruins of the Alhambra Theater, which was specially demolished for this purpose. On September 7, 1934, the government palace of Benito Mussolini was inaugurated.

The palace is 52 m high, but with its two bronze antennas it reaches a height of 85 m above sea level. It extends over an area of 4,500 m² and its construction, made of brown stone (Carparo), is reminiscent of a port fortification. There is a loggia on the facade facing the Rotonda square , while next to the main entrance one can notice reliefs with naked armed figures and two Roman trophies covered with emblems of victory. Two large bells were placed on the side towers, which were supposed to ring for special events, and on the sides of the main entrance two 20 m high bundles of lictors were erected during fascism , which were later torn down. Inside the palace there are frescoed salons such as B. Visit the coat of arms (where the Board of Directors of the Province of Taranto meets) and the mirror room.

The structure was realized in four years according to the project of the architect Armando Brasini , together with the Rotonda square in front of it (from where you can admire the Mar Grande and the Cheradi Islands ). At the moment Rotondaplatz is named after the “sailors of Italy”.
