Registan (Bukhara)
The Registan is a square in the Uzbek city of Bukhara .
location
The square is located in the northwest of the historic center of Buxoro, west of the Ark Citadel , from whose gatehouse a ramp leads down to the square. The Bolo Hovuz Mosque is located on the west side of the square opposite the gatehouse .
history
At the time of the Samanids , the square in front of the citadel was surrounded by palaces and other magnificent buildings. Among other things, there were madrasas , inns , gardens and pools . At the entrance was the Toqi Tirgaron, the domed bazaar of the armory. The square itself served as a marketplace , among other things for meat, grain, paper, ink, cattle, fruit, wooden utensils and much more. Executions were also carried out in the square .
Only the Bolo Hovuz Mosque remains from the original development of the square.
description
The square is irregularly shaped. In north-south direction it measures about 200 meters, at its widest point it is about 80 meters wide. The square is paved with stones in different patterns.
