Regius Professor of Aging (Newcastle)

The Regius Professor of Aging is a 2016 by Elizabeth II. On the occasion of her 90th birthday to the Regius Professorship appointed, but previously existing professorship for Gerontology (gerontology) at Newcastle University . It is the only Regius professorship for this research area.

History of the professorship

The Newcastle University Institute for Aging (NUIA) is a globally recognized research institute for gerontology founded in 1994. The aim was to bring scientists from the social sciences, the basic sciences and experts from the National Health Service together and to conduct research together. It is the largest research facility of its kind in Europe. In the institute, aging is researched and investigated in various scientific disciplines. In the UK Research Assessment Exercise 2001, the institute achieved the highest rating (5 *).

When the Queen wanted to donate a further twelve Regius professorships on the occasion of her 90th birthday, a panel of experts was put together that selected from the applications from various universities. One of the selected chairs was a professorship for NUIA under the direction of Louise Robinson . Robinson also became the first professor.

Surname name suffix from to annotation
Louise Robinson 2017 Robinson, who specializes in the treatment of dementia patients, has headed the NUIA since 2014. When the professorship was awarded in 2016, the University of Newcastle announced that it was undecided with the appointment. In 2017 Robinson was named as Regius Professor.
