The Regius Professor of Chemistry is a Regius Professorship for Chemistry at the University of Cardiff , founded in 2016 by Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her 90th  birthday . In addition to this Regius Professorship for Chemistry, there is also the Regius Professorship of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool and the much older one, founded in 1817 by George III. Donated Regius Professorship of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow.

History of the professorship

In 2015, during his speech on the state budget , Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne announced plans to establish additional Regius professorships on the occasion of the Queen's 90th birthday (April 26, 2016). Unlike in earlier times, the recent appointments are no longer accompanied by funding. Regius professorships are still the highest honor for scientists in Great Britain. The professorships are thus a science promotion program. This plan was implemented on June 6, 2016. Together with this professorship, eleven further professorships were donated.

The selection of the professorships was carried out by a panel of experts made up of scientists and representatives from business. The decisive factor was the contribution that the institutes had made to the prosperity of Great Britain over the years. The University of Cardiff was the first Welsh university to be awarded a professorship for work at the Cardiff Catalysis Institute (CCI) for world-leading catalysis research . The head of the CCI, Graham Hutchings , became the first professor . The management of the CCI handed Hutchings early 2019 at the of the University of Bristol coming Duncan Waas .
