Regius Professor of Materials (Manchester)
The Regius Professor of Materials is a Regius Professorship for Materials Research at the University of Manchester founded in 2016 by Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her 90th birthday .
History of the professorship
Materials research has been practiced in Manchester since it was founded in 1824, when Manchester's prosperity depended on the textile industry . This applies to both basic research , which for example led to the first production of graphene at the University of Manchester, to the development of tailor-made or sustainable materials.
In 2015, during his speech on the state budget , Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne announced plans to establish additional Regius professorships on the occasion of the Queen's 90th birthday (April 26, 2016). Unlike in earlier times, the recent appointments are no longer accompanied by funding. This plan was implemented on June 6, 2016. Together with this professorship, eleven further professorships were donated. The professorships were selected by a panel of business representatives and experts after an application from the various universities.

Philip John Withers | Ph.D., FREng., FRS | 2016 | 2016 | Withers says he's been fascinated by the way things fall apart all his life. The process of material failure can begin with inconspicuous causes and expand into catastrophic failure. Using this approach, Withers established a world-class institute when it comes to investigating technical failure. His research is based on problems from the industrial environment of Manchester and, in exchange with the clients and exploiters of his research, Withers considers the meaning of the professorship. Withers trained as a metallurgist in Cambridge, has taught in Manchester since 1998. Withers' important work deals with the stresses in the turbine blades of aircraft engines , friction welding processes, but also with basic research in the field of mechanics. |
