features
The flies have a body length of 14 to 16 millimeters. Their bodies are stocky and hairy, which makes them resemble bumblebees . Characteristic is a conspicuous, black transverse band on the thorax , as well as uncolored, transparent wings. The cheeks are clearly separated from the cheeks by a concave, arched pit. The fifth and sixth tergites on the abdomen are roughly the same length, the last abdomen segment is large and almost circular. The abdomen has light rust-colored hair on the upper side.
Occurrence and way of life
The species occurs in the temperate latitudes from Western Europe to East Asia. It inhabits forests and can be found there in summer in elevated places, such as on mountains or on towers and the like. The larvae develop in the throat of deer .
