The Empire of Sine was a state in what is now Senegal .

Before 1400 Maisa Wali Jon fled Kaabu and founded Sine. His descendants formed the Guelwar dynasty. The state was initially a vassal of Jolof for a long time . The ruler was called Buur Sin . Around 1500, many Serer immigrated under Elibana. Around 1550 Sine became independent from Jolof.

In 1867 the clergyman Ma Ba was killed because he wanted to Islamize Sine . After the French conquest, the ruler retained his nominal title until 1969.
