The Reichenowweber ( Euplectes psammocromius ) counts within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of fire Weber ( Euplectes ).

features

The Reichenowweber reaches a body length of about 15 centimeters. The males have an elongated tail plumage in their splendid plumage and then reach a body length of up to 35 centimeters. Weight data are so far only available for a single male who was 35.5 centimeters long.

The Reichenowweber has a strong, light, conical beak, black eyes and almost black legs. The male in the splendid plumage is broadly yellow-orange to yellowish-brown in color on the shoulder and on the small wing covers. In flight, the wings appear brownish, the tail plumage hangs down.

In the plain dress, the male resembles the female. The body plumage is predominantly ocher in color, with light stripes over the eyes, brownish on the top and lightly dashed on the underside. In comparison to the male, the female is dotted more densely with a hint of a white throat.

distribution and habitat

This weaver can be found in East Africa in short, dense and higher grasslands near waters of 1,800–3,000 m in northeast Zambia , in north Malawi and in the southwest highlands of Tanzania in the Iringa and Mbeya regions .

nutrition

Weavers feed on grass seeds and insects . They occur in large schools outside of the breeding season.

Reproduction

The males perform sightseeing flights, the breeding season in Tanzania is in May, in Zambia in January and in Malawi between October and November, polygamy is suspected.
