Reichsautobahn gas station Fürstenwalde
The Reichsautobahn filling station Fürstenwalde was one of the first filling stations on a motorway . It is located at the northern exit Fürstenwalde-West of the federal highway 12 . The petrol station was a type design, which is why later petrol stations were called Fürstenwalde. It is the last petrol station of this type that is still preserved in Germany and is a listed building.
At the Bielany Wrocławskie (formerly Breslau) motorway exit on today's Autostrada A4 there are two petrol stations of this type and another on the Autostrada A6 near Szczecin in Poland . All three filling stations are still in operation.
The gas station was built in 1937 by the Wilhelm Unger company from Berlin-Pankow based on a design by Friedrich Tamms . The provisional gas stations on the Reichsautobahn that had been used up until then were to be replaced by such type buildings . With its triangular floor plan, this construction fits into the triangle of the junction formed by the entrance and exit routes. The roof surface has a V shape. At the time it was used, the ground floor comprised a guest room with toilets, a storage room and a room for the gas station attendant. The rooms in the basement were used to store coal and oil as well as for heating and storage space. The architectural style met with criticism at the time. On the one hand, the open style in the sense of the new buildings was frowned upon, on the other hand they wanted large petrol stations in the style of the provinces of the time.
The filling station was in operation until December 1995. It was originally approached from both directions, from the west the vehicles drove over the opposite lane. On February 19, 1996, the gas station was entered in the list of monuments of the state of Brandenburg at the request of Ingrid Friese .
Further use is not planned.
