The age of the linden tree, which is designated as a natural monument , is estimated to be around 1000 years, which would make the linden tree much older than the neighboring historic village church. The tree has a height of about 19 meters and a crown diameter of about 17 meters. The trunk circumference is 10.80 meters at a height of 1.30 meters.

According to a senate resolution, the preachers who had previously been buried in the church in front of the altar were buried under the linden tree from 1782. The linden tree was mentioned in 1795 in Johann Friedrich Zöllner's travel notes . He wrote: “ Halfway through the way we stopped in the village of Reinberg to look at a great curiosity; This is a linden tree in the churchyard, which at the bottom of the trunk is 37 ½ feet in circumference, and is green both inside and out. It is completely hollowed out, and the bark has not only curved inward where it has cracked, but also sprouted young branches. It neatly forms two cabinets, each of which can accommodate a number of people. “In 1796 Wilhelm von Humboldt is said to have admired the mighty tree.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, there was also a Reineberger linden tree or thick linden tree in Reineberger Hagen , on the Reineberg .
