location

history
The place consists of the villages of Sint Joosland and the village of Nieuwland, which was founded in 1644 by diking a Middelburg polder. The place has only been connected to the island of Walcheren since 1818. Until then, it was only accessible from Middelburg by ferry. The former ferry house is located on the outskirts of the town on the motorway and houses a truck driver's café. While Nieuwland forms a larger town center, the older Sint Joosland further south, called “Oudedorp”, only consists of a small street. As an independent municipality, Nieuw- en Sint Joosland was formed on January 1, 1816 by the merger of the two municipalities of Nieuwland and Sint Joosland . On July 1, 1966, it was incorporated into Middelburg .
