Life

Zellner studied chemistry and physics at the University of Göttingen from 1965 to 1971 : in 1968 he received his diploma, in 1971 he did his doctorate in "physical chemistry", also in Göttingen. From 1972 to 1973 he then went to the Department of Physical Chemistry at Cambridge University as a postdoctoral fellow , and from 1973 to 1979 he was a "scientific assistant" again in Göttingen. In 1980 he completed his habilitation in physical chemistry in Göttingen. In 1979, Zellner went to the University of Texas at Austin as a "Visiting Associate Professor" . Between 1981 and 1987 he received a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation .

In 1983 he was appointed professor of physical chemistry at the University of Göttingen, and from 1988 to 1991 he taught at the University of Hanover . In 1991 he was appointed to the chair for physical chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen, and in 2010 he retired. From 2010 to 2013 he continues to teach as a "Senior Professor" at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Zellner did research primarily on the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere. In this area, he continued to hold numerous offices in specialist bodies and political bodies. He was chairman of the BMBF's expert group “Global Environmental Aspects” and since 2007 coordinator of the DFG priority program “Bio-Nano-Responses”.
