Reinis Kaudzīte

Reinis Kaudzīte (born May 12, 1839 in Vecpiebalga , Livonia Governorate ; † August 21, 1920 ibid) was a Latvian teacher and writer.

Life

From 1867 he was a teacher at the local community school. In various writings he opposed the cultural dominance of the Baltic German pastors. Under the influence of Jean-Jacques Rousseau , he published about 900 aphorisms . He also wrote several school books and, together with his brother Matīss Mērnieku laiki , the first realistic novel in Latvian .

Reinis Kaudzīte has been elected community leader several times. From 1904 he lived in different places and in 1913 moved with Karlīna Damrozi to Neubad . In 1920 he lived again with Matīss Kaudzīte, where he died.

The Kaudzīte brothers' home was converted into a museum in 1929, the first of its kind in Latvia. The novel "Mērnieku laiki" was published in 1883, partly in German translation (full new edition in 2012).
