Tefilat HaDerech

The Tefilat HaDerech ( Hebrew תפילת הדרך) is a Jewish prayer for travel, literally the “prayer of the way”. Jews speak it when they go on a journey outside the city limits as a wish for a safe journey and arrival at their destination.

The Talmud attributes the creation of this rite to the prophet Elijah , who pointed this out to a scholar: "When you go on a journey, seek the advice of your Creator and move on."

The Tefilat HaDerech is recited once at the beginning of each travel day if at least one Persian mile (approx. 1500 m) is traveled per day. If possible, this prayer should be recited while standing, although in places where standing up is difficult (Berachot 30a; Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 110,4-7), such as in a car or airplane, it may also be said while sitting. The prayer is said in the first person plural. Both Ashkenazim and Sephardim say this prayer, although the text is slightly different. There are also additional passages for aviation and shipping.

Alternative versions of this prayer - specifically for paratroopers, pilots, sailors and soldiers - were written by Shlomo Goren , the former Chief Rabbi of the Israel Defense Forces .
