A Reitschnecke , in Switzerland and Alemannisch Schnegge , also Reitspindel , is a special form of the riding stairs in the form of a spiral staircase without stairs . Usually snails are found in fortresses , barbican or roundels . They were used to pull heavy artillery up onto the defense plate or directly for riding . If there are stairs at a low height and / or large distance, it is also referred to as a ramp or stair ramp or spiral ramp.
