Remarque Institute

The Remarque Institute for the Study of American-European Relations was established at New York University in 1995 under the direction of Professor Tony Judt . It bears the name of the German writer Erich Maria Remarque , whose widow Paulette Goddard bequeathed the university a generous legacy.

The institute's task is to research and discuss Europe and to promote understanding between Americans and Europeans.

The institute organizes lectures, specialist conferences and congresses. With its relationships with universities and scientific institutions, it supports research travelers in the USA and Europe.

Since September 2007, it has expanded its activities to include the École normal supérieure in Paris . In cooperation with the Department of History there, it organizes and supports research on the Mediterranean and European contemporary history as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of the European Research Council .
