Remigijus Merkelys

Remigijus Merkelys (born August 5, 1964 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian composer.

Life

Merkelys studied at the Lithuanian State Conservatory and received diplomas in choral conducting (1989) and composition (1991 with Julius Juzeliūnas ). In 1992 he attended George Crumb's composition courses at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In 1989 he founded the Jauna Muzika chamber choir , which he directed until 1992. In 1991 he won the Barlow Endowment of Music Composition and was commissioned to compose the Missa L'homme armé .

In 1992 he initiated the Jauna Muzika New Music Festival , which takes place in Vilnius. From 1993 to 1998 he headed the music department of the Lithuanian Radio . In 1998 he founded a classic channel that he ran until it closed in 2001. At the composition competition for the 125th birthday of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis , he won first prize with the piece MiKonst for piano and string quartet, which was awarded by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, the Lithuanian Composers' Association and the Lithuanian-American Art Society. From 2003 to 2009 Merkelys was chairman of the Lithuanian Composers Union.
