Remigius of Rouen

Remigius von Rouen († 771) was the illegitimate son of Karl Martell from an unknown woman.

The monk Adrevald von Fleury reports in his Miracula Sancti Benedicti , written shortly after 867, that Pippin the Younger commissioned his half-brother Remigius in 750/751 to bring the relics of St. Benedict of Nursia back to the Montecassino Abbey . In 755 he was made Bishop of Rouen , which he remained until 771. In 760 he was sent to the Longobard king Desiderius and to Pope Paul . On his return he was accompanied by Simeo, one of the leaders of the Roman church singing school , whom he instructed to train his monks. But when Simeo was called back to Rome, he had to send his monks behind so that they could complete their training. The last attested appearance of Bishop Remigius took place at the Synod of Attigny in 762, which led to the Attigny Prayer Alliance .

The Annales Mosellani report on the death of Remigius et Bernehardus in the year 787. The information regarding Remigius is regarded as an error, the year 771 is considered to be the year of Remigius' death.

  1. ^ The Genealogica Arnulfi Comitis names (in this order) "Remigium et Geronimum" (Remigius and Hieronymus) as sons of "Karolus senior ... ex concubina"
  2. Pippin's brother Karlmann lived in Monte Soracte and Montecassino since his retirement in 747 , and was buried in Montecassino after his death in 754. In November 751 Pippin had himself proclaimed King of the Franks ; previously, an embassy headed by Abbot Fulrad and Bishop Burkard von Würzburg had negotiated with Pope Zacharias the change from the Merovingian dynasty to that of the Carolingians ; There is no record of Remigius belonging to this embassy.
