René Boyvin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

René Boyvin (* around 1525 in Angers , † after 1580 in Rome ) was a French engraver , etcher and draftsman of Mannerism .

Boyvin worked for the engraver and coin cutter Pierre Milan, who ran a flourishing workshop in Fontainebleau and later in Paris around the middle of the 16th century . In the early days of their collaboration, they did not sign their engravings, so the authors are difficult to distinguish due to the similarity of their style. Only later did Boyvin sign his records. Of the engravings that are definitely attributed to him, around 240 sheets have
survived. The models for her copperplate engravings were initially works by Rosso Fiorentino , Léonard Thiry, a colleague of Rosso's coming from Flanders, and Lucas and Lorenzo Penni. Boyvin's copperplate engravings give an impression of the variety of artistic works carried out in Fontainebleau : they are engravings of ornaments, of handicrafts, goldsmith's templates, of paintings by Rosso, as well as reproductions of works by Italian artists.
