René Mariat (born February 12, 1911 in Lunery , Cher Département , † November 30, 1969 ibid) was a French politician. From 1956 to 1958 he was a member of the National Assembly .

After graduating from school, Mariat worked as a farm worker and joined the Parti communiste français in 1933 . Thanks to a by-election in February 1939, he succeeded in entering the local council and at the same time being elected deputy mayor of the community. However, in September of the same year he was ousted from this post again by the forced dissolution of the PCF. At the same time he was drafted into the military as a soldier. In June 1940 he was captured by the Wehrmacht and, due to his membership in the Communist Party, remained in captivity until the end of the war in May 1945.

Immediately after his return and the re-admission of his party, he was re-elected to the Lunery Town Council and also as deputy mayor. With the death of his predecessor in 1948, he took over the office of mayor. Mariat, who was represented in the committee of the PCF in the Cher department , ran for the parliamentary elections in 1956 as second in the list in the department. A strong result by the communists, who achieved around 36 percent in the Cher department, secured him a seat in the National Assembly. There he voted in 1958 against far-reaching powers of attorney for Charles de Gaulle , which resulted in the establishment of the Fifth Republic , but could not prevent it. As a result of a new electoral system, he had to stand for election in a constituency in the parliamentary elections in the same year and was clearly beaten by his Gaullist opponent in the second round . In 1962 he ran unsuccessfully for re-entry into the National Assembly. He remained active as mayor of Lunery until his death in 1969.
