René Fernando Saffirio Espinoza (born October 9, 1955 in Temuco ) is a Chilean politician.

Life

He was born to Constantino Saffirio Vásquez and Lya Espinoza Sánchez . After attending the Instituto Mercedario de Victoria and the Escuela Industrial de Temuco schools , he began studying law at the Universidad de Chile , which he graduated in 1977. Saffirio Espinoza then worked as a lawyer for the human rights organization Vicaría de la Solidaridad .

He was already politically involved in school and joined the Partido Demócrata Cristiano de Chile in 1969 , for which he held various positions.

From 1990 to 1992 he was Minister of Justice of the Chilean Región de la Araucanía . In 1992 he was elected Mayor of Temuco. He was re-elected in 1996 and 2000. From 2004 to 2009 he worked for the Universidad Mayor . He was also a member of the Temuco Court of Appeal from 2006 to 2009.

In 2009 he was elected for the Partido Demócrata Cristiano in District 50, which includes Temuco and the municipality of Padre Las Casas , for the legislative period 2010 to 2014 with 28.7% in the Chilean National Congress. Among other things, he was a member of the committees for external affairs and labor. In November 2013 he was re-elected with 36.8% for the 2014 to 2018 legislature. He is a member of the committees for labor and social security, constitution, legislation and justice as well as the control commission for the secret services, of which he has been chairman since 2014. On May 25, 2016 he resigned from the Partido Demócrata Cristiano and was an independent member of the National Congress.

In November 2017, he ran as an independent candidate for the new elections and was elected to the National Congress for District 23 for the legislative period from 2018 to 2022.

Family and travel

Saffirio Espinoza is married and has one son.

In 1995 he visited Germany and signed the city of Magdeburg's Golden Book .
