René Sutter (born January 5, 1966 ) is a former Swiss football player . During his career he was under contract with various clubs in Switzerland and was also part of the Swiss team that surprisingly beat the favored Brazilians on June 21, 1989.

Career

The midfielder started his career in 1984 at SC Bümpliz 78 . A year later, Sutter signed a contract with BSC Young Boys , where he played in the National League A for five years . In the 1985/86 season he won the Swiss football championship with the Bernese . In 1990 he moved to league rivals FC Aarau . Three years later, Sutter returned to the Young Boys again. In the later years he was under contract with Yverdon-Sport FC , FC Baden and FC Wil . In 2001 he returned to his youth club SC Bümpliz 78 and then played the 2002/03 season at FC Solothurn .

In 1989 he played two games for the Swiss national team . Sutter received his first use on June 7, 1989 in the game against Czechoslovakia. He ran on from the start and was replaced in the 58th minute by Kubilay Türkyılmaz . The game was finally lost 0: 1. Two weeks later he played for the national team for the second time and was substituted on for his brother Alain Sutter in the 56th minute of the game against Brazil . The game ended with a surprising 1-0 win for the Swiss. The Brazilians included Cláudio Taffarel , Alemão and Dunga on the field.
