Renate Thomas

Renate Thomas (born April 24, 1953 in Oberhausen ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Renate Thomas studied classical archeology , art history and sociology . In 1979 she did her doctorate at the University of Cologne under Hans Georg Niemeyer . The topic of the dissertation was "Athlete Statuettes of the Late Archaic and the Strict Style". In the same year she also worked at the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne. Thomas has headed the museum's scientific editorial team since 1995. In 1989 she organized the “4th International Colloquium on Roman Wall Painting ”. She was also a founding member and until 1995 a member of the board of the “Association Internationale pour la Peinture Murale Antique”. In 1999 the archaeologist was the organizer of the “14. International Congress for Ancient Bronzes ”in Cologne.

Her university career began in 1982 with a teaching position at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Cologne. Thomas completed his habilitation in 1992 with the thesis “The decoration systems of Roman wall painting in Italy and in the provinces from the Augustan to the Trajan period. Studies on stylistic development ”in Cologne. There she was appointed adjunct professor in 1998. In 2006 she was a visiting professor at the Institut Català d'Arqueologia Clàssica in Tarragona . Thomas has been married to the classical archaeologist Eberhard Thomas since 1975 . In 1995 she was awarded the Cologne Prize Special Prize for the book "Roman Wall Painting in Cologne".
