Renate Zoepffel

Renate Zoepffel (born August 23, 1934 in Mexico City ) is a German ancient historian .

Renate Zoepffel studied Ancient History , Classical Archeology and Classical Philology at the University of Frankfurt am Main and the University of Freiburg from 1955 to 1965 . Between 1957 and 1959 she stayed in Mexico to study. The doctorate took place in February 1965 with Hermann Strasburger on the subject of studies of the history of the Philistine of Syracuse . Then Zoepffel became a research assistant at the Department of Ancient History at the University of Freiburg. The habilitation took place there in 1977; Zoepffel was the first woman who was able to complete her habilitation in history in Freiburg. In 1981 she was appointed Associate Professor in Freiburg , and since 1992 she has been the University's Women's Representative. In 1997 Zoepffel retired.

Research focuses on Greek historiography , ancient social history and gender relations in ancient Greece. She translated parts of Aristotle's work into German.
