The Renfrew Trinity Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Renfrew in the Council Area Renfrewshire . In 2009 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Monument Category C. The church is still in use as such today.

history

At the beginning of the 1860s it was decided to set up an own parish in Renfrew. The first service was held on April 21, 1861, in a school facility on High Street . Later they moved to the Athenaeum , which was used from September of the same year. Until the church building was completed in June 1865, a room in Renfrew's town hall was then used . Peter Coats from Paisley laid the foundation stone for the new church . The parish initially belongs to the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland , which merged into the Free Church of Scotland in 1900 and finally merged with the Church of Scotland in 1929. In 1895 a parish hall was added behind the church, which was expanded in 1932. The cost of building the hall was £ 850. An extension of the nave by 260 additional seats was made in 1902.

From 1933 to 1946, the future New Testament scholar William Barclay was a clergyman at this church, which at that time was dominated by families of craftsmen from the local shipbuilding industry. They suffered from unemployment after the Great Depression and from the hardships and destruction of World War II. Thanks to these simple people, he learned to preach more intelligibly.
