history

After the Ilmenau bobsleigh club was established in 1908 - first as a subdivision of the Ilmenau winter sports club and since January 24, 1912 as an independent club - the first bobsleigh race in Ilmenau took place on Gabelbachstrasse on January 12, 1908 . As early as 1909, the construction of a toboggan run began on the western flank of the Lindenberg in the Gabelbachtal. The total length at that time was 2750 meters. The track was four meters wide and had a gradient of a maximum of 12 percent. Until 1923, the Ilmenau bobsleigh club held bobsleigh races there every winter, and the club itself maintained 16 bobsleigh teams at all times.

When higher speeds became possible due to the further developed bobsleigh, it was necessary to build a special bobsleigh run in 1926. This run began on the 749 meter high Lindenberg at the club hut of the Ilmenau bobsleigh club, also built in 1926, which is now the “Bobhütte” mountain restaurant. The bobsled run ran over the northern slope of the Lindenberg and had 5 curves, it was 1908 meters long. The inaugural race took place on January 9, 1927, and a year later the track was supplemented by an electric sled and passenger elevator.

During the GDR era, the facility was used by the Empor Ilmenau BSG . Between 1967 and 1970 Ilmenau was also a central training base for the GDR sports team.

The track, which also serves as a recreational toboggan run outside of the competitions, was inaugurated on October 7, 1989, and was named after the former luge athlete Wolfram Fiedler .

After the political change in the GDR in 1990, the winter sports club was founded in 1990 e. V was founded in 1998 in the winter sports club Ilmenau 1908 e. V. renamed.
