The Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad (R&S) was a railroad company based in New York and Vermont ( United States ). It existed as an independent company from 1832 to 1968.

The company was founded on April 14, 1832 and began in the fall of 1833 with the construction of a standard-gauge railway line from Ballston to Troy . It branched off in Ballston from the Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad, which had existed since 1833 . The line was opened on August 19, 1835 to Waterford and finally to Troy on March 19, 1836 and had a total length of 41 kilometers. The terminus in Troy was initially on the western bank of the Hudson River .

On January 1, 1851, R&S leased Saratoga & Schenectady. At the same time, a joint use agreement for their route was concluded with the Utica and Schenectady Railroad . Together with the other rail companies that run Troy, Rensselaer & Saratoga founded the Troy Union Railroad on January 20, 1851 , which built a connecting railway between the companies including a bridge over the Hudson and a common central station on the east side of the river. These plants went into operation on February 22nd, 1854 and Rensselaer & Saratoga was able to give up its own terminal station in Troy.

The Albany and Vermont Railroad , which operated a route from Troy to Albany , was leased on June 15, 1860, as was the Saratoga and Whitehall Railroad on April 1, 1865 and the Troy, Salem and Rutland Railroad on June 19, 1865. In 1868 the Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad finally merged with several railway companies in the region, namely the Saratoga & Whitehall, the Rutland and Whitehall Railroad and the Troy, Salem & Rutland. The name was retained. The route network was thus extended into the state of Vermont to Rutland and now had a total length of 282 kilometers including the leased railways. In 1869 another ten kilometers were added when the Glens Falls Railroad , a branch line from Fort Edward to Glens Falls , was opened. This railway company was leased from its establishment on July 26, 1867 and acquired on August 10, 1906. R&S also operated on the Greenwich and Johnsonville Railroad, which opened in 1870 .

On May 1, 1871, the Delaware and Hudson Company (D&H) leased the R&S. The final merger of D&H with R&S, Saratoga & Schenectady and Albany & Vermont did not take place until D&H was reorganized in 1968. Today, the main line Schenectady – Saratoga Springs – Whitehall, the branch line to Glens Falls, still exist from the former network of the Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad. the routes Albany – Troy – Mechanicville (all three owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway ), Whitehall – Rutland (owned by the Clarendon and Pittsford Railroad ), Eagle Bridge – Salem and Greenwich Junction – Thompson (both owned by the Batten Kill Railroad ). In Saratoga Springs, the route was relocated to free up building space in the city center. The Amtrak operates on the route Schenectady Rutland the Ethan Allen Express and the Adirondack .
