Nockalm Reptile Zoo
The Nockalm reptile zoo is located in the Patergassen district of Reichenau in Carinthia , Austria . It is one of the most species-rich exhibitions of living venomous snakes in Europe.
The year-round reptile zoo has been open to the public since 1995 and is managed by Peter Zürcher, who turned his hobby into a profession. The zoo has been expanded several times since it opened and has around 300 animals in around 135 terrariums, 120 of which are indoors. About 60 of the 90+ species of snake are cobras , rattlesnakes and vipers . There are also lizards, crocodiles and tarantulas.

Accidents
In March 2011, an employee of the zoo died at the scene of the accident within about 40 minutes after being bitten by a shower rattlesnake, despite the fast-functioning rescue chain. It was the first fatal snakebite in Austria since the 1950s. In February 2015, Peter Zürcher's wife was bitten in the hand by a Texas rattlesnake while she was being fed and brought to hospital after an allergic reaction, but survived the incident without permanent damage. Peter Zürcher himself was the victim of a snake bite in 2000.
