Requiem - The Vampire Knight

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Requiem - The Vampire Knight (Original Title: Requiem - chevalier vampire ) is a so far eleven-volume comic by the author Pat Mills ( Marshall Law ) and the illustrator Olivier Ledroit ( The Chronicles of the Black Moon ). The German edition of the morbid French Gothic Horror -Comics was published between December 2002 and 2013 by the now defunct publisher Kult Editions. In July 2016, Pat Mills announced that the long-awaited 12th volume in the series will be published in French at the end of 2017 and that a digital version of this volume will be published in English at the same time. The series will end with Volume 13, which Pat Mills says will come out "in the not too distant future".

action

The plot begins with the death of the Wehrmacht officer Heinrich Augsburg on a snow-covered battlefield on the Eastern Front in 1944. He hopes to finally find peace, but since he also committed more war crimes and atrocities during the war, he ends up on the nightmare as a punishment Planet resurrection . This hell , in which time runs backwards, turns out to be an evil reflection of the earth and is populated by all sorts of nasty figures such as vampires, werewolves, demons, zombies and other undead.

Heinrich befriends Otto von Todt, a captain of the Resurrection Corps. Through this Heinrich gets the opportunity to become a member of the guard of Cyrus, the teacher in the capital Necropolis. After years of training to become a knight Nosferatus, which most of them do not even survive (or survive, because they are already dead), Heinrich has now achieved the (highest) rank of a vampire knight and is henceforth called Requiem .

Heinrich secretly had a relationship with the Jew Rebecca during his lifetime in Berlin. When the Gestapo arrested her one day in front of his eyes , he did not dare to intervene. Although he should renounce everything from his previous life when he was appointed vampire knight, he longs to see his lover again. However, he soon realizes that after her death she did not end up in this world, but in a kind of heaven that remains inaccessible to him. Therefore Heinrich, now called Requiem, devotes himself entirely to “life” in his new world, where he gets caught up in a war between warring gods. Requiem plays a decisive role in this, as he wields a powerful sword that can lead to victory or damnation.

outlook into the future

The Kult Edionen Verlag, which previously produced the comic books, no longer exists. According to a request from Finix Comics , which also continued to run The Chronicles of the Black Moon , there will probably be another publisher in the future that will continue to run the Requiem Saga. This is probably the "Kult Comics" publishing house, as there is now a redirection to kultcomics.net under the page kult-editions.de. For years the continuation of the series was uncertain, among other things because Ledroit himself was not planning any new volumes as he was working on the series Wika, but since July 2016 he and Pat Mills have found time again to work on the two final volumes 12 and 13 to work.

Reviews

  • "Here Ledroit appears again more as a painter than as a draftsman, and anyone who has followed him in the past knows that he doesn't mess up, but bulges. The albums are literally overflowing with opulent, detailed, bright (mostly red) and disgusting drawings The series is really not for children, the albums are delivered in a shrink-wrapping package. Whether you like it depends, among other things, on whether you mind being constantly talked about by unholy gossip. On the other hand, it takes a lot of imagination, to describe hell like this. And not least because of Ledroits art everything comes across a lot less ridiculous than it would normally be. In addition, the main story is quite interesting and not unexciting. But the greatest strengths are and remain the great and gigantic paintings. " (Lost Film Comments)
  • "Requiem shines above all because of its pictures, less because of its story. The coloring is excellent. The comic, which is supposed to be expanded to 20 volumes, gets better and better over time." ( Erik Schreiber , Fiction Fantasy)

Claudia - the vampire knight

Author Pat Mills has also created the sub-series Claudia - The Vampire Knight (original title: Claudia - Chevalier Vampire ), with the female main character, together with the illustrator Franck Tacito since 2006 . Four volumes of this offshoot have been published so far ( Die Gates der Hölle (2006), Violent Women (2009), Red Opium (2010) and The Sign of the Beast (2011)).
