The Reserva Ecológica de Buenos Aires , also known as Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur , is a 350 hectare flat land area on the banks of the Río de la Plata , east of Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires .

history

American pampas grass ( Cortaderia selloana , 1993)

It was created in the 1970s when the construction of the expressway in Buenos Aires dumped rubble from demolished buildings into the river along Avenida Costanera Sur . Over time, solid land emerged through sedimentation , the biodiversity of which is exemplary for the Argentine pampas : today you can only find a few trees there, mainly willows , acacias and kapok trees . Examples of the fauna in the area include wild flamingos , herons , ducks, parrots and beaver rats .

On June 5, 1986, the City Council (Consejo Deliberante de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires) passed Law No. 41,247, which placed the area under protection.

The future of the ecological reserve is uncertain. Commercial development plans are a threat, as are plans to build a north-south expressway through the Reserva Ecológica.

The area burned on January 9, 2009. A cloud of smoke could be seen over Puerto Madero for almost 24 hours before the fire department was able to put out the fire.

Hiking trails

Due to its proximity to the city, the Reserva Ecológica is used as a recreational area by the residents of the capital. There are a number of trails for birdwatching, cycling and walking. The entrance to the park is at the southern end of Puerto Madero.

Access to the reserve will be closed in March 2019. The gates are closed to the public.
