The Resolution 216 of the UN Security Council from 12. November 1965 condemned the unilateral declaration of independence by the white minority in Southern Rhodesia . The resolution describes the government led by Ian Smith as an " illegal racist minority régime ".

The resolution reads as follows (unofficial translation):

The Security Council

1. Decides to condemn the unilateral declaration of independence by a racist minority in Southern Rhodesia ;

2. Resolves to call on all states not to recognize the illegitimate racist minority regime in Southern Rhodesia and to renounce any support for this illegal regime.

The resolution was adopted by 10 votes with one abstention by France at the 1258th session of the Security Council . On November 20, 1965, UN Security Council resolution 216 was reaffirmed by UN Security Council resolution 217 .
