UN Security Council resolution 217

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The resolution 217 of the UN Security Council on 20th November 1965 reaffirmed in Resolution 216 marked on 12 November condemnation of the white minority regime in Southern Rhodesia and called on all states an embargo on arms, military equipment and oil. However, since the resolution did not explicitly refer to Article 41 of the Charter of the United Nations and only contained a call for sanctions, these were not binding. No binding sanctions were imposed until a year later in Resolution 232 .

Resolution 217 was passed with 10 votes, with France abstaining .
