The resource construction set ( RCS ) is a by Digital Research developed computer program with which you elements of the graphical user interface " Graphical Environment Manager " in a WYSIWYG - Editor could create. Improved versions of Atari were later made available, and after Digital Research was sold to Caldera , GEM and the RCS were released as Free Software . As a result, new compilations exist today, based on the GPL sources.
The elements supported by the RCS include menus , dialogs , warning messages, so-called alert boxes, icons, bitmap images and strings. The structure is saved in a so-called .RSC file and can be integrated into your own programs. It can also be changed independently of the program file. Changes or translations of the user interface can thus be made without recompiling the program.
Glade offers a similar concept for GTK + programs today, for example .
Alternatives
As an alternative to the original RCS program, which had not been further developed for a long time, third-party manufacturers quickly offered competing software for the Atari ST platform:
- Kuma-RCS from Kuma, commercial software
- Interface from Shift, commercial software
- ORCS by Thorsten Otto, Shareware
- WERCS, commercial software, was included with the Lattice C compiler
- RSM by Armin Diedering, freeware
