history

Founded by professors and students from the University of Massachusetts Amherst , the first edition appeared in 1988 shortly before the break-up of the Soviet Union. The magazine soon became an influential academic platform for a Marxism shaped by Althusser in the North American context.

Despite its founding by economists (including Stephen Resnick, Richard D. Wolff , Jack Amariglio, David Ruccio) and consistent publication on the specialist areas of Marxism such as labor theory, class theory and crisis theory , Rethinking Marxism is not only geared towards special economic topics. It deals with Marxism in general, including the theory of capitalism , imperialism and the alternatives to the capitalist system.

Rethinking Marxism is also known as a medium for contemporary art . Each issue presents the work of a contemporary artist (e.g. Martha Rosler , Mark Lombardi , Michael Rakowitz , Thomas Hirschhorn , Chto Delat).

The editor was Jack Amariglio from 1989 to 1998, and David Ruccio from 1998 to 2010. He was replaced by S. Charusheela (2010-2013). Since September 2013 the magazine has been published by Marcus E. Green and Serap Kayatekin.
