Étienne Balibar (born April 23, 1942 in Avallon ) is a French philosopher and well-known thinker of post-Marxism .

Life

Étienne Balibar was born in Avallon, France, in 1942. From 1960 he studied at the Ecole normal supérieure (ENS), where he became a student and collaborator of Louis Althusser , an influential Marxist theorist of the 20th century.

Balibar was a member of the French Communist Party (PCF) from 1961 . However, he was expelled from the party after criticizing its migration policy in one of his articles.

He received his doctorate in philosophy in 1987 from the Catholic University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands. He completed his habilitation in 1993 at the Universitè Paris I. From 1994 he taught political philosophy and moral philosophy as a professor at the University of Paris-X (Nanterre) , where he has been retired since 2002.

From the 1990s he also taught at several universities in the USA, around 2000 at the University of California, Irvine, and was visiting professor for French and comparative literature at Columbia University in New York in 2017 .

Together with the physicist Françoise Balibar, he has a daughter, the actress Jeanne Balibar .

Positions and work

Balibar developed a series of works on the foundations of Marx's theory and political philosophy. Important publications by Balibar were the Five Studies on Historical Materialism (Paris 1974), Race, Class, Nation (with Immanuel Wallerstein , Berlin 1990), and The Limits of Democracy (Hamburg 1993). Above all, Balibar advocates the project of "equal freedom", in which equality and freedom go hand in hand within a radical democracy .

Balibar has worked out three levels of general :

  • the real , globalization : many people are increasingly dependent on the world market;
  • that of fiction , he speaks of church and state , as imaginary communities : it regulates ideological fiction;
  • that of the ideal , with a demand for égaliberté , as a possible moment of politics that can never be completely negated or satisfied.

In his article "Is there such a thing as 'neo-racism'?" (1988) he works out how racism in Europe (in the context of intra-European migration and before the experience of colonialism) developed around the complex of immigration and has become racism without race . The theme of this racism is no longer the biological inheritance or the superiority of certain groups or peoples over others, but the irreversibility of cultural differences, the harmfulness of any confusion of borders and the incompatibility of traditions and ways of life.
