In addition to the rescue medal itself and the public commendation, a cash reward can also be granted. However, people who are or have been entrusted with protecting the lives of others, or who are responsible for averting dangers from the general public on an official or professional basis (e.g. fire brigade or medical service staff ) can only be granted the rescue medal if this is done during the rescue act had significantly exceeded the average level of their duty .

The decision as to whether the rescue medal, the public commendation and, in addition, a monetary reward are granted, is made by the state's prime minister himself at the suggestion of the interior minister. He also hands them over. In the case of the awarding of the rescue medal as well as the public commendation, a certificate signed by the Prime Minister is presented to the rescuer. However, he can also delegate this conferral authority to other persons. Both the awarding of the rescue medal and the public commendation are announced in the official gazette for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The rescue medal is minted in silver and has a diameter of 33 mm. On its front, the state coat of arms of the country was shown in the middle, which is surrounded by the inscription: MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN .
